It refers to the beginnings of perfumery, whose scents had a built-in magical and curative ability. It also implies "from the beginning" in this context. On the other hand, it conveys the idea that a fragrance's wearer feels its animal power and enigmatic powers of love with all of her senses and means "to initiate.''
